Turning Goys into Girls

While browsing through the blogs of my classmates from our first text response assignment, one article that multiple people were writing about was called "Turning Goys into Girls".  This article, on page 260 of Argument!, really got my attention.  The article describes how the media is changing the way people think they should look like.  This problem was initially girls wanting to achieve the impossible physical characteristics of a Barbie doll, but has now evolved into men trying to look like Ken.

The article goes into detail that Men's Health magazine is causing men to feel the same insecurities that women typically feel.  For example, men are worried that their abs are not defined, biceps too small, and have a thinning head of hair.  Magazines like these are full of tall, tan, and handsome, which causes the viewers to think they need to have the same physical appearance.  Men are now obsessing over their physique like women do.  The article also explains that men are beginning to dye their hair to cover up grays and even wear make-up in order to have a younger looking face.  What is the world coming to?

I have noticed that there are a whole lot of men out there that obsess over their appearance, and I am also convinced that the media is to blame.  Advertisements of television and in magazines are all using the hunkiest of all hunks which causes people to feel the need to look just like them.  I am all for people trying to promote a healthy lifestyle, but when men start to use make-up to look younger I believe the line has been crossed.  Everybody is different, and I wish society could understand that.  Uniqueness is beauty.  Genetics and natrual aging cannot be controlled, so in my opinion it should not be judged.  Especially by magazines that are repeatedly convincing people that their products will result in an unrealistic appearance.
